Name: Samuel Travers
Training institute: Dairy Training Limited
Qualification: Studying for the New Zealand Diploma of Agribusiness Management
Background: Classical musician, or dairy farming? That was the decision Samuel had to make about six years ago. “I had a passion for classical music from a young age. I played the piano and then the double bass and had almost completed a degree in music at the University of Auckland when I decided to give dairy farming a go.”
It was the realisation that living in Auckland, which he didn’t like, was essential if he continued with a music career that tipped the balance. ‘I grew up on a sheep and beef farm and had milked cows on neighbours” farms from high school days and liked the prospect of dairy farming.” So, he gave it a go.
Now, with six years experience in the dairy industry, Samuel is an Assistant Manager on a farm with 370 cows. “I am given wide responsibility to run the daily farm operations by the owner.”
Reasons/benefits of completing the New Zealand Diploma of Agribusiness Management: The diploma is Samuel’s passport to a career in dairy farming. “I am doing this course not only to gain essential, in-depth knowledge, but also to build the foundations for a farm management, or, hopefully, a farm ownership career.”
“I am developing a good understanding of all aspects of farm management, both practical and theoretical and I can put into practice what I am learning in class – this is the real strength of the course.”
Future goals: Samuel is definitely aiming to become a farm manager of a 500+ cow farm in the near future. The ultimate would be farm ownership if everything turns out well.
