Current employment: LIC (Newstead), Sire Analyst
Job description: My role is to help with breeding and purchasing decisions for Holstein-Friesian, Jersey and Kiwicross bulls. This involves selecting potential bull dams based on several factors, such as breeding worth (BW), genetic diversity and Traits Other than Production (TOP). These potential dams will then be mated to a complimentary bull, and if a bull calf results, several factors will decide on whether it will result in LIC purchasing the bull. Establishing and maintaining breeder relationships is key in this role.
Comments on the scholarship: The scholarship opened doors for me. I developed essential skills such as cover letter and CV writing, plus got the chance to talk to a wide variety of people in the industry doing many different jobs. It was by talking to one of DairyNZ’s guests at the scholarship dinner that I found out what a Sire Analyst was and what the job entailed.
Future plans:My 5-10-year goal is to move into a more senior position in the Livestock Selection team here at LIC. My long term goal is farm ownership.
