School: Westlake Boys' High School
University: Massey 2015-2017
Current employment: I am currently undertaking a Master's Degree in Management, majoring in Agribusiness, at the University of Waikato, as a DairyNZ Master's Scholarship recipient
Job description: My thesis is on a farm system trial which has been conducted over the last three years at the Northland Agricultural Research Farm. As part of the scholarship, I also get to work out of the DairyNZ office at Newstead in Hamilton. This gives me insight into DairyNZ as an organisation, including exposure to current events, both internally and externally, as well as the opportunity to network with, and draw on the knowledge of, DairyNZ staff.
Comments on the scholarship: The scholarship was truly invaluable to me. It significantly eased the financial burden associated with study and allowed me to fully focus on my studies. One of the things that differentiates the DairyNZ scholarship from many of the other scholarships, however, is the mentoring that the scholarship provides, which is hugely beneficial, especially if you make the most of the opportunities that are presented.
The personal mentoring encouraged my own growth and brought opportunities to explore potential career opportunities. The scholarship also provided networking opportunities, the chance to build strong relationships with those on the scholarship program, and to meet industry leaders. This mentoring has been influential in terms of providing me with opportunities to progress within the industry.
Future plans: I want to have a positive influence on the New Zealand dairy sector, and to have a meaningful and tangible impact on the sustainability of our industry, hence my interest in farm systems science. I plan to take part in the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme, and in the longer term would like to undertake a Nuffield Scholarship.
Scholarship recipient: 3 years
