Current employment: Area Manager and Product Specialist, Semex
Training Institute: Lincoln University
“I grew up in Carterton, a town boy with a really strong interest in the land and animals,” explains Ryan Lett, Area Manager & Product Specialist for Semex. “I am lucky because my job combines my love of animals and people.”
After completing his Bachelor of Commerce/Agriculture degree majoring in Farm Management and Rural Valuation at Lincoln University, Ryan went dairy farming for a year while his partner completed her degree.
“The position at Semex was not advertised,” Ryan explains, “I sent in a CV and letter expressing interest in working for Semex when we got back to Waikato. Fortunately, I was offered a position and started in April 2011. Being young, having an interest in genetics from my early days with calf club, A & P shows and the like as well as my degree all helped me get the position. Now I am well established as a salesperson with a good farmer client base, excellent progression prospects with this large, multi-national company and doing something I really enjoy.”
Ryan is convinced that his ability to relate to farmers about their cows in their language and on their terms is important.
“I have variety in this job. I am not just a salesperson. I am also an adviser and I work with farmers to build better herds through knowing their herds’ needs, through visiting them regularly and developing trust. Visiting farmers who have used one of our bulls two or three years ago and have got their daughters and love them, is immensely satisfying.”
While Ryan’s degree is more business than science oriented, his love of animals and his excellent people skills have meant that Ryan was able to grow into his position quickly.
“I can talk to farmers on a bit more level basis in his language with a hands-on approach that farmers like,” says Ryan. “Young people wanting to get into this very rewarding work who have a love of animals, the outdoors and enjoy diversity and challenge should go for it!”
