Role

Manager

Mark is a technical team leader at Lye Farm, one of DairyNZ’s Waikato research farms. As well as helping to conduct research projects, he manages a team of technicians who carry out trial work on-farm for DairyNZ and other industry organisations.

Mark has extensive research experience and expertise in using and maintaining the specialised indoor infrastructure on Lye Farm and training cows to become acclimated to it. He enjoys the variability and challenge associated with his job, and working with a dedicated, passionate group of people. “I love working with my team, helping them to develop their skills, knowledge, and leadership abilities. And giving them opportunities, I think we do that really well.” says Mark.

“The team here is focused on producing high quality research,” says Mark. “It’s different every day; there are always new angles to research, things we haven't done before. And it's always challenging to try and meet those requirements. We have repurposed the indoor facilities and brought in new technology and ways of doing things. So, it's constantly reassessing the way we operate, looking for opportunities, and making improvements.”

Mark has had an interesting and diverse career, which began with gaining a Bachelor of Science in zoology from Massey University before working at the Hamilton and Singapore Zoos. He came to DairyNZ over twenty years ago. “I was attracted to DairyNZ by the opportunity to work with animals and the combination of working in science and the dairy industry.”
