A stint on a Northland Dairy farm straight after university study was game-changer for Bill Hamilton, and now it’s dairy all the way as his career unfolds.

“I was born and bred in Whangārei and had a rural – but not a farming – background. After studying Agricultural Science at Massey, I had my sights set on what was then a DairyNZ graduate consulting officer role. However, uncertain times due to the pandemic meant I took an interim job on a Northland dairy farm instead – and loved it!

“One highlight of that farm job was when I won the 2023 NZ Dairy Industry Awards National Dairy Trainee of the Year. Then I got involved with the Northland DIA Committee, which has been an incredible experience.”

Bill says he learned a lot over his few years on that Northland dairy farm, and now his original aspirations are back on track.

“It was very exciting to finally get this DairyNZ role. Farmers are facing so many challenges, so building their confidence in the future of dairy in Northland is really important.

“Many of the options to address Northland’s challenges are already out there – so highlighting their potential and encouraging farmers to consider using them will help their farm business in many instances. For other issues, it’s about helping to identify and implement new solutions for farmers.

“I also working alongside my really good network of contacts in Northland. They’re mainly from roles with the Northland DIA committee, working on farms around the region, and other local dairy sector organisations. Bringing them and farmers together will benefit everyone – and make sure we’re aligned with our messaging.”
