BCom in Economics (Hons), M. Ecological Economics

Mark has been the Head of Economics at DairyNZ since 2022. Mark’s role at DairyNZ involves leading the Economics and DairyBase teams. He has a longstanding connection with the primary industry; his family is involved in dairy farming, and he has half ownership of a dairy farm in the Waikato. When the job at DairyNZ opened up he saw it as the perfect blend of his interests in economics and dairy farming.

Mark believes his strengths lie in finding pragmatic solutions to complex issues. He is focused on helping his team to accomplish their goals, as he says, “That is one of the things I enjoy about working at DairyNZ. I am surrounded by talented people; I just make sure they have the tools and the direction to succeed.”

He brings a wealth of experience to the role in both the economics of policy and the environment, being involved in the development of New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme legislation. His international experience includes working on both sides of the table, for New Zealand and the European Union, during climate change negotiations.

Mark has always had a passion for economics, international affairs, and policy. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Political Science which he attained with Honours from the University of Otago and followed up with a Master of Ecological Economics from the University of Edinburgh.
