Mubashir has been a senior economist at DairyNZ since 2021 and specialises in macroeconomic modelling, predictive analytics, machine learning, and the development of web applications.

He is involved in the publication of the annual New Zealand Dairy Statistics and DairyNZ Economic Survey. He has also developed several decision-making tools, including the Econ Tracker. Additionally, he supports other business units, including providing analysis of the global landscape and market intelligence, focusing on the global dairy trade, imports, exports, and interest rates, and their impact on New Zealand’s dairy sector.

Mubashir has extensive international experience. In Pakistan he completed a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics at the University of the Punjab and Master of Development Studies at COMSATS University. After gaining these qualifications he decided to focus on economics, gaining a scholarship to study for his Master of International Development at the International University of Japan. During this period, he also completed an internship at an investment bank in Mongolia. He also worked in Malaysia after which he moved to New Zealand to complete his PhD in Economics at the University of Waikato, before joining LIC and then DairyNZ.

“I come from a farming family and working in the primary sector has always been my passion,” says Mubashir. “I enjoy looking at numbers, understanding the global factors which might influence the sector, identifying trends, and making projections. My main motivation is to support dairy farmers so they can make informed decisions and protect themselves from external shocks.”
