“Helping farmers help cows” is just one reason Penny loves supporting DairyNZ to keep animal care at the heart of New Zealand’s sustainable and competitive dairy sector.
“I see my role as translating research, alongside farmer experience, into messages or support for farmers,” says Penny. “DairyNZ’s science-based advice is always informed by evidence, but farmers’ experience is also invaluable.”
Based in DairyNZ’s head office at Newstead, Hamilton, Penny works at a national rather than a regional level.
“As well as looking after the Enhanced Animal Care programme, I provide subject matter expertise on animal welfare and policy, and work alongside colleagues and external stakeholders to promote good animal care practices to farmers and their advisers.”
“That includes working with internal and external lameness experts, plus our communications and graphic design team, to produce online and print resources for farmers. I also work on seasonal campaigns promoting our animal care work, engage with stakeholders on cross-sector issues, and make sure everyone’s messages align.”
Penny provides input into relevant government policy too, and helps shape DairyNZ’s positions on a number of topics, including what good practice looks like from a science perspective.
“For example, we know cows are highly motivated to lie down. We test this scientifically by changing access lying time and observing their response. Once we understand what cows need and want to be content and comfortable, we can identify opportunities to provide these within our outdoor farming systems.
“Animal welfare and care is a nuanced topic with multiple perspectives,” says Penny. “However, it’s crucial that our animal care solutions for farmers are science-based, economically and practically feasible, and meet local and overseas customers’ expectations.”
An ex-sharemilker, Penny gained her Diploma in Science from Massey University and worked in the Animal Welfare team at the Ministry for Primary Industries for 12 years, joining DairyNZ in 2023.
“I’ll never stop learning or having interesting conversations with farmers, scientists, vets, bankers, and anyone who has an opinion on it. It’s just one reason I love my job!”
