Role

Manager

Charissa is the technical team leader based at DairyNZ Lincoln, in Canterbury. Her role combines hands-on research with managing the South Island technical research team, which includes technicians at Lincoln and the Southern Dairy Hub in Southland.

“I love how practical the scientists at DairyNZ are, how farmer-centric our projects are, and seeing the focus on conducting credible research that is applicable in the real world.”

Charissa has worked on a wide range of research projects during her time at DairyNZ - from small plot trials, such as looking into pasture genetic gain, to large farm systems trials like the Plantain Potency and Practice and Low N Systems programmes, as well as projects at the Southern Dairy Hub. She has a particular interest in animal health and welfare, and has valued her involvement in related research, such as investigating heat stress.

“Seeing the results of the research I’ve been involved in is also rewarding and knowing that I'm contributing to the future success of the dairy industry. And I enjoy people leadership, especially helping my team to grow and develop,” says Charissa.

Charissa’s love of animals and a growing interest in agriculture inspired her to attend Lincoln University, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in animal science and agricultural biochemistry. Living and working on a dairy farm while at university ignited her passion for the dairy industry, and a summer scholarship opened her eyes to the world of research - both pivotal in her decision to start a career in research in the dairy industry.
