Dawn is a dedicated in scientist for 30 years’, including eight years’ international experience in Australia. She is well-known for her expertise in in farm systems. Her research has focused on exploring alternatives to pasture-based wintering and understanding their impacts on cow welfare and the environment. Her other areas of expertise include pasture composition and utilisation, alternative milking frequencies, supplementary feeding and reducing nitrogen leaching. Since 2017, Dawn has been heavily involved in developing the Southern Dairy Hub and establishing its farm systems research.

Before embarking on her scientific career, Dawn gained extensive on-farm experience, working on several dairy farms operating a range of farm systems. This practical farming background has supported her success as a systems thinker, allowing her to understand and integrate all aspects of the farm system effectively.

Dawn notes that, “Finding solutions that make a difference for farmers” is what drives her passion for research. Her strong on-farm practical experience complements her scientific expertise, making her an asset in delivering impactful research.

After completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with first-class honours at Lincoln College she gained a PhD in animal nutrition, specifically magnesium metabolism, from Lincoln University.
