    - Growth rates have dropped into teens below historic averages for the month and even slightly lower than this time last year. DTT Waimate West farm, where pasture growth is being pushed with proGibb and UAN applications, is still recording daily growth rates of 30 kg DM/ha. ProGibb induced pasture growth clearly visible at DTT Waimate West

    - DTT Stratford is struggling to lift pasture covers, creating a deficit in the feed budget, and the decision has been made to buy in more silage as well as increase the amount of PKE fed to dry cows in the herd home. Cows are spending most of their time in the herd home and are only being turned out onto pastures for short periods of time to avoid overgrazing and pugging.

    - The DTT Waimate West heifers are being grazed at our runoff in Hawera, with Hereford bulls used for mating. 82% of the milking herd has been inseminated to date. Several cows which had pre-mating heats recorded have not come up for mating yet. After analysing data recorded from the smaxtec rumen boluses, we have identified cows which have reverted into a non-cycling stage. These cows are being treated with CIDRs. There were also some cows which had signs of a weak heat which did not go above the threshold and therefore did not come up as a heat alert on the system. For those cows we are using the short-cycling programme.

    - The first lot of autumn born calves at DTT Waimate West have been weaned with weights ranging from 90kg to 118kg. First lot of weaned calves tucking into their meal.

    - The last fortnight has been busy on the spring calving farms with heifer teat sealing, Rotavec vaccinations and replacing rubberware in the sheds.

    - DTT Kavanagh and the Future herd at DTT Gibson have both had their first calves slightly ahead of schedule. Cows have been drafted into early and late calving cows. Early calving cows are on a transition diet with 3kgDM/cow/day hay and 100g/cow/day MagOx dusted onto pasture. MagCl and a mineral mix is going through the dosatron.

    - The science team is busy sorting winter botanicals on all farms.

    - It’s also a good time to dig-up and repair any non-functioning leachate suction cups at WWDF and Stratford. With the winter rain it shouldn’t take long before the science team can test if they are working again.
