  • Pongakawa Monitor Farm Update

This week we have an update from Jamie at Pongakawa.

Final production was 895kgMS/ha ahead of 881 last season. The farm managed to peak above 2kgMS/cow/day as per one of their KPIs and were close to forecast target. Reproduction improved, whilst a shorter mating at higher empty rate, the farm has managed to tighten the calving spread.
On farm at the moment, they teat-sealed the heifer’s last week and the mobs have been split into three (Fats, Lights, Heifer’s) with each being offered targeted diets.
This season they have planted 9ha of annuals on the run-off that they will harvest for silage soon, this was a change from last season where oats were planted. Jamie said the oats they originally planted were going to seed too early, so they have tried the annual as an alternative this season.
Maintenance continues around the farm in the dry period.

Next update we’ll have a look back on the season and how the monitor farms managed against this seasons KPIs. It’s been a varied season across the region but most would agree better than the previous season.
